D23 Expo 2019 Day 2: Sebastian
As many of you know, when it comes to cosplaying characters (usually sidekicks) that aren't completely on the human side, I tend to turn to Broadway for inspiration. In my not-so-humble opinion, what we see on stage is the quintessential way to represent said characters. Sebastian is no exception.
The crustacean composer was another fine example of me seeing a Broadway costume and wanting it for myself. While I will admit, the La Jolla production's version suits the aesthetic of the character much more accurately, I really LOVE the style of what Tituss Burgess wore.
Earlier this year, I had the chance to perform as Sebastian in a (not-so-)local production of The Little Mermaid, which gave me the perfect opportunity to make this outfit for the con. (The perfect example of killing two birds with one stone.)
Thanks to the magic done by @joyworswick, I was able to portray one of my favorite characters in one of my favourite looks of his. After that, it was simply a matter of going back and adding a few-er, well...ok, a great deal of more details. And thankfully, they all survived the trip and was well worth the trouble. (Even though it's still not finished yet!) I was surprised that there were as many people who recognized the source of this suit that did. But then again, if there were one con to wear this to where people might actually know where it's from, D23 would be the place. Of course, there were a few (maybe five or six) people that mistook me for Tamatoa (*cough @mouseinfo cough*) but with the voice and mannerisms, I'm relieved that people knew who I was supposed to be.
I don't know when the opportunity might arise for me to wear this again. Heck, I don't know if I'd want to try and make the La Jolla version and see how well that does. But I will say this...Anytime anyone needs a cranky sidewalker to accompany their headstrong mermaids (be they a redhead or brunette ;)), I would be all too happy to volunteer.
I'm so glad I decided to wear this suit on the Saturday because as you can see, there were a bunch of fantastic Little Mermaid cosplayers that day! (The most out of all three by far!)
